there in my kitchen and I don't want to use poison near our food, does anyone know something I can use not only to kill them, but also to keep them from returning?

Powder chalk will keep ants fron entering
spinkle it where they are coming in from, and they will not cross that line

sprinkle turmeric powder on their way. otherwise during off cooking hour pour some kerosene oil to keep them out.

Sprinkle Cinnamon around where they are coming in, it will keep them away.
