Think of the absolute value is a parenthesis. Always do inside a parenthesis before applying what occurs outside of it.

So, do the absolute value of -2: |-2| = 2

Then, apply the negative in front of it. 2 becomes -2.

Answer: -2

Any time the || are around a number, that means Absolute Value. That is defined as the distance from zero, which will always yield a positive number since you can't have a negative distance. How far is -2 away from 0? Exactly 2 units. Therefore |-2| = 2 and due to order of operations since there is a negative outside the absolute value, you would calculate that last.
-|-2| = -(2) = -2

|#| means absolute value of a number.
|-2| = 2
|2| = 2

As you can see, Absolute Value is nothing more than the magnitude of any number, and note that 'magnitude' is always a positive number.

If you have -|-2|, then:
-|-2| = -(2) = -2
