That was certainly true in the 1960's. And don't forget, the Yankees and Giants used to play in Yankee Stadium, while the Jets and Mets were both in Shea. So the Shea tenants appealed more to the fans in the eastern parts of the Metro area.
Of course, everything changed when the Giants and Jets both moved to New Jersey. I would guess that loyalities in football are pretty much split -- with many just liking both teams -- while baseball loyalties have stayed the same. One friend of mine in NYC said most of his friends rooted for any team that was doing well in a particular year, which kind of makes sense.

It also has to do with the fact that for the 1960's and part of the 1970's, the Giants and Yankees both player in Yankee Stadium, and the Jets and Mets both played in Shea Stadium. The fact that these joint homes no longer exist as it was has changed this and blurred this distinction somewhat. Where most of the teams fans live also helps. In Long Island, fans tend to be Met/Jet fans. In New Jersey, there are many Giants fan, who tend to also be Yankee fans.

I will throw a kink in your theory. As a native from New Jersey, I grew up a Yankee and Jet Fan. My uncle, a native from New York, is a Met and Giant fan. Now, that is not the majority rather just a sampling. I think that theory might pertain more to older fans who were fans prior to '62 when the Mets joined the league or prior to '60 when the Jets joined the league. But I think the appeal tends more to be based on how your relatives feel. You either kiss up and like their teams or you spite them and root for the teams they don't pull for. Another theory is that for a lot of years the Jets and Mets were really bad, so it was just easier to root for the Yankees and Giants.

I'm a New Yorker and I think that their are a lot of Mets-Jets fans out here, and Yankees-Giants fans. I'm a Yankee fan, and I'm not much of a football fan, although I do watch with my brother. I root for both New York football teams. I love all New York sports teams.

Seems like that to me, because the Jets played at Shea Stadium with the Mets and Football's Giants played at Yankee Stadium as well. so it all hasn't do with where they played before Giants Stadium, I heard a Lot of memebers of the Skulls and Bones Society at Yale University are Giants fans because they Played a Year at their Football Stadium (Yale Bowl) on their Campus.

BARRY BONDS ROCKS! YEAH!! WHOO!!!
Just kidding sorry. I'm still irritated about all the Bonds questions. Anyways, people just assume if you live in a region, you're a fan of every sports franchise in that region. Like, I live in CT, so for baseball, everyone assumes you're a Yankees or Red Sox fan, and if you aren't, they're like,"Wait...what team is that?" (can we say "Bandwagon fans?"). And for football, it's just Patriots (my dad is probably the only Steelers fan who liked them before the SuperBowl).
