All these guys did not use their own hand to kill their victims. Other people did it for them. Could it be Dr Shipman. He was alleged to have murdered over 300 of his patients.

There is a book called 'Devil in the white city" it is about the building of the 1896 Worlds Fair in Chicago and it has two story lines. One is the Archetects and their troubles in getting it built and the second about an unsavory man who as the story unfolds does torture and murder many many women.
This is a true story and I believe it is the first documented killer with a multy state spree. It is a good well writen book if you are into that kind of story. It had great history too.

Thug Behram.
He lived in India, and has frequently been said to be the world's most prolific serial killer. According to numerous sources, he was believed to have murdered 931 victims by strangulation between 1790-1830 by means of the ceremonial cloth used by his cult.

Gilles de Rais could be the one as well. He was was a French noble, soldier, accused and ultimately convicted of torturing, raping and murdering dozens, if not hundreds, of young children, mainly boys. The number of murders is generally placed between 80 and 200; a few have conjectured numbers upwards of 600. The victims ranged in age from six to eighteen and included both sexes. Although Rais preferred boys, he would make do with young girls if circumstances required.

I must also add that MURDEROUS, GENOCIDAL DICTATORS ARE NOT SERIAL KILLERS.
Serial killers are specifically motivated by a variety of psychological urges, primarily power and sexual compulsion.

A serial killer will go through an "emotional cooling-off" period in between the homicides. it will take a while until the emotional intensity of the first murder will decrease significant enough to make him want to kill again.

The people you mentioned are not serial killers, they are mass murderers. There's a difference. There was a guy twenty or thirty years ago, somewhere in England, who killed about 60-75 people. I just cant remember his name! The program on TV had something to do with a train station.

Well, you would have to define serial killer. The individuals you mentioned are dictators who may or may not have had a hand in killing their victims.

For example, John Wayne Gacy was a serial killer who killed young boys and kept their bodies under the floorboards of his home. He masqueraded as a member of the community by working as a clown to young kids (pictures of him in his clown outfit are downright creepy; do a google image search on this guy and you'll get my point).

Google Ted Bundy and there's a classic description of a serial killer.

According to Wikipedia, the definition of a serial killer differs from that of a dictator. A dictator doesn't kill people in three or more separate events; a dictator comes to power and usually kills people as a way of "purging" society of "undesirables." The motive for serial killers isn't necessarily to "purge" people from society. Go to Wikipedia, type in "serial killer" and then "dictator" and then you will see what I mean.

UPDATE: To answer "Go Fish," it isn't religion so much, it's actually the followers that do these things. I would love to see the statistics that back up Go Fish's opinions.

That would be a impossible question to answer.

There are thousands of unsolved murders, some of which haven't been identified as 'serial'.

Take a soldier in the army, he can rack up 100's of kills in one sortie or mission.

One guy in B.c Canada by hte name of Robert Picton is being charged with 20's of murders. Aperantley he faid Vancouver Hookers to his pigs for years.
