I need craft ideas. I am going to be 16 years old. I DO NOT want anything childish. I want something sophisticated. I have been on many craft websites. I want something I can make and actually want to keep.

I know what you mean so many craft ideas just seem like time wasters to me.

When I was 16, I wanted new bedroom furniture. I was saving up for college and did not want to pay the cost of new furniture.

I read up on furniture refinishing. Then I stripped my old headboard, desk, and dressers and refinished them. They looked great ... I even relined the drawers with brocade fabric.

If you decide to try this, make sure you have a well ventilated area to work. Always wear safety goggles! You will also need rubber gloves for the "stripping" phase of this project.

Any time in your teenage years is a good time to start scrapbooking. You can make pages anything from cutesie looking to ultra sophisticated and classic looking - it's entirely up to you and your skill level.
Check out this website to get a look at the range of what can be done: http://twopeasinabucket.kaboose.com/ Look in the Gallery.

You will certainly want to keep your albums if you start scrapbooking - in fact they will probably become family heirlooms.

Other than that you could try: knitting, sewing, crocheting, cross-stitch, beading/jewellery making, candle-making, stained glass .....

Knitting, Sewing, Jewelery making (think crystal, cut glass and silver wire, not plastic beads and boondoggle), image transfer (Stenciling, Iron-on transfers, silk screening. that kind of thing), and scrapbooking can be very chic and sophiticated hobbies. But remember that any new skill takes time to develop, so your first few attempts probably won't look so hot. Tackle one project and technique at a time and be patient.

For ideas and instructions, check out craftster.org. Its an uber hip and slightly cheeky craft board.

Have you ever done any beading? There are all kinds of sites that offer free instructions for beaded jewelry. The cost is minimal, and the supplies can be purchased in any craft store. You could start making Christmas gifts for your friends and family.

Im actually looking for the same answer. Im only 14 but i love crafts but everything i know how to do looks kiddish. So, I just make bracelets with beads, paint picture frames, and crochet hats and then donate them for Operation Christmas Child to put in the shoe boxes they pass out at Christmas. You could sew a drawstring bag with a cute cloth and use shoelaces as strings. If you don't want to keep it, you could donate it to a homeless shelter. Hospitals can never get enough booties, hats, and blankets for there babies to take home, or you can paint plaques to give to the parents of babies who pass away at birth.HMMMM what else what else...i do immature crafts with the kids i babysit but then i have an exuse to do em! You can make pom pom balls and donate them to animal shelters for the kitties or sew collars and toys for the people who adopt the pets to take home with them....if you donate to charity, there's lots of stuff to do! Email me at abbyelissa@yahoo.com for more ideas...good luck!

I would recommend cross stitch-of course I'm partial-I've been doing it for many years. There's lots of free patterns to get you started that don't look childish.

definetly knit or crochet. They are really fun and you can wear the end product.

I would learn to knit first, then crochet later--thats what I did. Knitting is a bit harder than crochet, and they both create entirely different fabrics.
