When the engine is cold, and occasionally when it's warm, I will push the start button and it will click then short out. All the lights on the speedo go dark. I wiggle some wires around the positive end the lights come back on. I do this a few times until it starts up.

This has been a problem following the last two times I took the bike in to the dealership for service. Last time it happened, I took it in and they said the negative cable was loose.

This time, though, I've checked all the cables and they're all tight.

What would cause my bike, upon hitting the start button, to short out like that? Why does wiggling cables/wires fix it, while no cables appear to be loose?

Thanks in advance!

I had a similar problem on my 05 heritage. bike would start and run fine for a while then would go dead and all power would cut off. finally got so bad bike would only run for a few minutes. problem was in a breaker switch. it would get hot and click off. after cooling down a few minutes power would come back and bike would start. have the dealership check the breakers

My friends sportster did this last friday. The connector for the positive cable going to the starter broke. It would touch just enough when we wiggled the wires. Had to replace the connector at the starter. Turns out that a wire under this one goes up to the key switch. When not connected at the starter, no power went up to the dash or headlight. He called Harley, and they told him that wires break on sportsters all the time. Harley engineering for ya. Good luck

Check the wiring on the starter for tightness.Check starter solenoid for proper connection. You could have a broken wire in the loom where you wiggled the wires.Check with continuity tester.

relax1 sounds on the right track.
I had a tail light once that was intermittent.
Using a multimeter, I used a probe that had a pin on the end to pierce the insulation, to get to the wire inside. Turned out the internal wire was broken, even though the external insulation looked perfectly fine.

check the wires themselves, if you are wiggling them and it'll start and they are all tight , you may have a bad wire. also , remove the pos and neg cable from the battery and clean the posts and contacts. may be some goo on them. check all ground wires very good.
