I have a 12 amp Eureka vacuum motor and I need a nut that will screw on to the motor shaft to hold the rotor in place. The problem is...I've tried about 50 different nuts that are all the right size, but not one of them will screw onto the motor shaft. The original nut got lost and I can't seem to find one to replace it. Why won't any of the nuts screw on? Is the shaft threaded backwards?

The nut probably simply uses a shallow, fine thread. Unless you order the correct nut from the manufacturer, you could deplete the entire stock of nuts in every hardware store in town and still come up empty. Is the shaft threaded backwards? It's possible. However, if the nuts begin to screw on, then seem to jam, the threading is normal - you just need the correct nut. Understand that most nuts/bolts, the type we keep handy around the house, use coarse threading. However vacuum cleaners, and other like appliances such as hand mixers, are, because of the high speeds involved, forced to use fine threaded nuts in conjunction with the motors to eliminate the possibility of nuts spinning off.

The fan shaft you're trying to replace the nut on, is a left handed thread. It's made that way so the nut doesn't loosen under the starting torque of the motor, which rotates in the opposite direction. You most probably won't find a replacement for it even at most vacuum repair shops, as they don't lose the one they took off and put it back on after they're replaced the fan.

It is most likely that it is a backward thread. try a vacuum repair store to get another nut. I don't think you can find one at the hardware store but you can call and see. Or you can watch for one on the side of the road. I am a treasure hunter myself and find allot of stuff on the road side.

It is a left hand thread (backwards) and you can buy one easily from Eureka. Get on line and order one from the parts and service section.
