my friend wants to learn how to skate board but he thinks he wont be good cause he didnt start when he was young and he wont be good now that hes 17. does it really make that much of a difference at what age u start at ( i mean by skill wise not how much talent he has) if he starts now with practice it shouldnt make to much of a difference right?

Uh, no? The thing might be that when you're young you're less afraid of things and more of a dare devil I guess. Like when I get on a rollercoaster I think I'm gonna die, but the little kids are like "yeah!!". It's like a miracle when I get off the ride. When you're a kid the danger is less apparent and less scary. If I was to learn how to ride a bike now at 17 I would probably be so scared of falling off I'd never get on. But as a kid that never occured to me that I could fall off. There are some things that are easier to catch on to as a kid. Such as learning new languages. It's much easier for a kid to learn 3 different languages than an adult because kids are starting fresh where as an adult you have lots of knowledge and you want to make sense of everything, including that languge. In this case I don't think it matters. Skateboarding is different. I still see adults and teens playing with their boards and all. They fall off but they get back up.

It does matter what age you started skateboarding, it depends on how much you practice. People only think they are too old to skate because the young generations started very early and it looks embarassing for an elder to learn when a younger person is a good skater.

It all depends on the person's abilities. I will say that starting at a younger age is better simply because they are learning balance, basic skills, and erasing the fear factor. By the time they are 17 they have either quit or they have become highly skilled.

For me, I quit because I wasn't surrounded by better skaters and I got bored. I wish I hadn't but I stopped learning new stuff. Now I am more affraid of getting hurt than anything.

No. As long as he enjoys it.

Tell him I learned how to ride a bicycle at 37 and a friend learned at 45.

Next year, I will hit the slopes for snowboarding lessons.

And remember, tell him to wear a helmet, knee and wrist guards. ALL THE TIME. He may look like a dork but at least, safe.

i dont think it would make a difference.. at a younger age some people arent capable of really dedicating themselves to skateboarding but when youre older ytou can apply yourself better so if he really practices he should be fine

I think, the older you get, the harder it is to learn. But he might have some natural talent, so he should give it a try.

You probably shouldn't start over age 60, you might break a hip.
