How do you feign concern for a situation?

Situation occurred and I was asked for advice, now I am turning to questions: Say person x was accused of something sordid. You were approached to offer support and comfort to the person 'accused' by a member of the accused's family. Problem as you see it, the accusation may be accurate and therefore the accused is not worthy of support and concern but a good thrashing by the legal system. How would you hand this?
