Some use it as a crutch for not succeeding. Some as an excuse for holding others back, etc. What's your opinion?

Unbiased, you should consider a name change or a hood. Why not concern your self with the betterment of Mankind, than with just one KIND of Man!

blackRage, I beg to differ. Racism is often used as a crutch by those who makes excuses for failures in their lives and within their realm of understanding. Rise up with education!

Not sure if I would call it "racism", but, agree with how people use whatever they can as something to "blame" their life on.
However, .... there IS still a lot of selective prejudice everywhere as well as more mainstream types of prejudice on all levels... Sometimes, I have to admit that I look around and it seems we are going BACKWARD instead of forward.
Also, the attitudes about "Christians" or any of the God believing religions... THAT, has been deteriorating for quite some time now regardless of all the stars making "Christ" movies or speaking up about their Faith...
God be with you :)
**I have to say that I have never seen Semper speak ill about anyone here in YA, of course, I don't manage to see everything, but, a good number of them anyway. :)

I noticed that you say some use racism as a crutch and some use it as an excuse but you didn't mention that some use it because it is a legitimate reality.
I know that you don't feel this way but the way that you worded this question suggests that racism is only an excuse and a crutch and not a reason.
Racism in America is the "reason" that we (blacks) are in the condition that we are in as a people. It is not an excuse although there are some individuals that may use it as such.
Racism cannot be a crutch because we cannot lean on racism. The Civil Rights Laws are a "crutch"; the original concept for Affirmative Action would have been a crutch but racism, itself, is not a crutch for black people. Racism is the "accident that caused us to have to have a "crutch".
In my opinion, America has "consumed" her citizens with racism. The next question is how to put the fire out?

No. I for one am not. I certainly think racism is a product of poor education. when we are little we hold on to everything our parents say and do. If we are rebelling against our parents (or whatever other reasons occur) we fall into groups of people who will accept us. Therefore we pick up some of the beliefs of the people we are around most. If everyone could stop and think honestly "is this really what I believe or is it something someone told me to believe?" maybe we would have a lot less racism and a little more intelligence out there. Maybe then we could evolve and work together instead of against each other .

Attention mongers. Nothing else but. I think that the people that we see on YA! wants attention. This is their only way of doing so. I would guess most are very, very young, because as you notice, the nonsense quadrupled when school let out for the summer. Most people are not consumed with the trivial. Most people are thinking about family, bills, work, etc. Most people are not thinking about if someone is black or white. Think about it. You are an educator. You have a family, wife, etc. In your busy life, how often do you even remember strangers on the street? Probally never. It is hard enough to concentrate on the things that are important. I think the average American is thinking about how they are going to fit all they have to do in a short 24 hour day. Racist people and attitudes are the true minority. Really, who has the time for it in today's society. Unless a person is unemployed and very lonely, things like that never enter their mind.

i could not believe you extra, that's particularly between the main disgraceful countries to stay in. extreme poverty fee, between the main important financial gaps between the detrimental and the wealthy (theres notably lots no center classification at this component), the politics is a comedian tale, each and every thing is enterprise offered and run, gun regulations are an embarassment, the police are only like the protection rigidity now, crime is a comedian tale, the minimum salary is so astounding low, racism/sexism/homophobia remains very consumer-friendly, the conflict on drugs is barely ramping up, stupid issues like prostitution, abortion, gay marriage and birth control are nonetheless being debated. Obama calls himself a admired liberal, yet isn't something yet a conservative pawn. The democrats/republicans are notably lots one occasion, run by means of the corporates, against the folk. We bask in a million distinctive wars, we commit all varieties of atrocious conflict crimes, breaking all varieties of international regulation (destroying residences, killing women/toddlers/civilians, beginning and persevering with wars in countries the place none could be). i could pass on for EVER. Tax cuts for the wealthy, financial device in the shitter, preparation is a comedian tale, incarcerations are at an all time extreme, and the optimal in the international. I actually could pass on continually. united statesa. has became right into a goddamn mess in the final 2 many years. Get out NOW, and don't seem lower back.

This is just an opinion, but I think a lot of people are consumed by a lot more than just racism. A lot of people are just consumed with being a victim period.
People like to think they are a failure because of an outside force other than themselves. They know that what they are doing is wrong and that is why they use excuses. It's not an excuse for you or me, its an excuse for their own selfish reasons so they don't have to feel bad about themselves for not doing what they know they are supposed to be doing.
I think that as long as there is someone there to take care of them, and as long as there is someone there to pat them on the back for having the hard life that they feel that they had, it will not change. I don't see how there can be so many people (white and blacks) who are on welfare who don't work, who don't try to work, who would rather live in a rat hole than to try to do for themselves for some reason or other; then I see other people who have children, who are single parents, who don't get child support, who don't get welfare, who work multiple jobs to support their kids who DID have a hard life and they strive to make it. I know someone who was a single parent of 6 kids who NEVER had welfare. Never. You can't tell me there isn't a way. Some people need welfare I know, don't get me wrong, but most of the people on it, don't need it.
Some people can be so strong when it comes to picking themselves up off the floor, and it seems that others would rather stay there. I don't understand it.

I don't think everyone falls into that category, but I will admit there are a fair number. It is unfortunate because it keeps us from moving forward as a society. Racism is bred through ignorance and segregation. The answers are tolerance, education and exposure. The more of these we have the less likely racism is to grow.

All people are entitled to respectful treatment, honesty, and fairness. The meaning of the word "racism," which once pointed out an inequity, now serves to point out the hate felt by the person using the word against all who disagree, on principle, with their point of view. Example; I was called a racist for saying that I thought O.J. was guilty. Therefore, I do not subscribe to the word for the meaning has changed from its original intend, to nothing more than a meaningless barb hurled by haters of all who disagree.

perhaps but i try and not to worry about it over much, i can only control my own actions and be responsible for them. if i've ever been held back it's been my own doing and not some made up "them" but such is the mentality of a lot of people. again i reiterate the changes may be slow but things are changing. semp ole' buddy ole' bean impatience does not become you as you well know god doesn't exactly work in anything that we would know as time, the best any of us can hope for is to be an example for the ones after us, we're all blessed and cursed that way. as long as you stay true to what you are there's not a lot more anyone can ask of you, what others do and say is up to them no one has any control over that but them

I assume you're talking about the US? I'm an American, and I'm not at all consumed by racism. So, that statement is a bit of a stereotype. Of course, we all know racism exists in the US, but I'm fortunate to live in an area of the country (California/Bay Area) where it's not as prevalent.
By the way, Semper Fi, I received an email from Answers that you've tried to contact me, but I accidently deleted it. If it wasn't positive, please don't bother re-sending it. I deal with enough bs in my life as it is.
