No legal degree should be worth much in another country. When you go to law school, you study THAT country's laws. That is not knowledge transferrable to another country.

I know lawyers from New York who are bussing tables in NYC.

And even a lawyer from any other state cannot just go to another state and practice law -- they have to either take the local state bar, or get approved on motion if the states are reciprocal and they've been in practice long enough.

The lawyer from Hungary could have used his foreign degree to take the state Bar, and if passed, would have been licensed to practice in the state.

Just like (from what I understand) a lawyer from the US can use that degree and license to apply to be a solicitor or barrister in England. The person still has to meet all the local qualifications.
