Absolutely. The key to surviving is to let the delegator know that you have tried but are unable to complete the task. To hide your shortcoming is a guarantee of trouble. If there is something the delegator can do to increase your chances of success, be sure tell him/her. Remember, the delegator wants you to succeed because that means s/he was smart to make the delegation.

Every situation has a solution, but sometimes they aren't excepted because of the cost , timing or resources. It doesn't sound like you are the decision maker, so don't hold back thinking that they won't go for it. If you come back with nothing...not a good thing to do.
