I think this question was settled back when kennedy was elected. Catholic office holders don't tow the line of the pope.

Of course not, when was the last time Catholics influenced the politics of a country to faciliate their own private beliefs? When was the last time a catholic stopped vital and life-saving scientific research from being undercarried, even by non-christians, because of their notions of the soul? When was the last time a catholic condemned a fellow catholic to death rather than undergo a common medical procedure like an abortion to keep them alive? When was the last time a catholic banned condoms in a catholic country that was filled to the brim with aids, saying "It's there fault because they don't abstain" When was the last time a Catholic mother starved their filippino baby on the grounds of an excorcism ritual? When was the last time a non-catholic was persecuted, barred from promotion, or fired from their job by a catholic on the grounds of religion?
Oh... five minutes ago you say? Oh, well never mind then. *fades into background*

I do not worry so much about answering to the pope, as much as I worry about their unwillingness to tell they had true views about Roe vs Wade. Knowing Rove, the last two appointees were gifts to the far right for their undying support for W. Being that Judge Roberts wife, did pro bona work for Feminist of Life, a pro life group, there was no reason to even ask.
