Is it any kind of oil? Or a special kind?

Someone was asking me about it, and I didn't know. Plus the web wasn't all that helpful.

I think he has a minute amount of gold flakes and wanted to display them in a small bottle. And he heard somewhere that oil could be added to these bottles.

I didn't know, so that's why I asked! ^_^

I have a jar of gold leaf from Alaska. It has parafin oil in it.

I'm not sure why you'd add oil, but I can think of a couple of other things which you might add. One would be "surfactant," which is a substance that makes water "wetter" so that the water wets the gold flake surfaces better and ensures that the flakes won't float. Ordinary detergent is a good surfactant. Another thing that might possibly be useful is a "deflocculent," which helps keep small mineral flakes (usually clays) from clumping together.
