Wow, I'm surprised nobody mentioned Walter Conkrite. He was American's news anchor and the most trusted man in America. Once President Johnson lost the support of Conkrite, he knew he lost middle America, and he was the reason LBJ dropped out of the 1968 presidential election. He covered practically all the major events from 1960s until the 1980s.

2) JFK whose fame began in the 50's and resonated beyond his death in '63.
3) Elvis Presely a 'relic' of the 50's staying current, a safe bridge between them damn teenagers and their parents.
4) Martin Luther King that nice black man who was so polite even when talking about ugly topics like segregation.
5) Sidney Poitier the actor surrogate for King and most all Blacks, a guy too 'nice' not to invite to dinner or to have marry your daughter.
