Using a steamer to remove wallpaper isn't as popular as it once was. "We used to use them 25 years ago, and they were (heated with) propane," says Larry Meacham of Larry's Painting and Decorating in Fresno.

These days, steamers are electric, he says. "They may work for some people, but I don't use them," he says.

Bishop doesn't use steamers either. "It works, but you end up scalding your hands. It also takes twice as long to strip the wallpaper."

Instead, Meacham and Bishop like to use a concentrated remover solution that is mixed with water. The solution dissolves the adhesive wallpaper backing, making it easy to take off. Before starting, gather the right tools and do some basic preparations. Tools you'll need include: one or two 3-to-6-inch broad knives, a ladder, a scoring tool and a garden sprayer, such as a 2-gallon plastic pump.

How To Remove Wallpaper
Removing wallpaper is easy when you use these odorless, non-toxic and biodegradable products.

Removal Techniques

Try peeling back the existing paper at a corner or at a seam. Many times the paper will "dry-strip" off the wall. Other times, the surface layer may peel off, exposing the bottom, paper layer. Pull slowly to improve your chances of removing large pieces.

Purchase a high-quality wallpaper removal solution or gel from your local retailer. (To buy a 4 ounce bottle of wallpaper remover click here)

Wet the surface of the paper according to the instructions, using a pump sprayer, sponge, or paint roller. BE PATIENT! Give the solution plenty of time to do its work.

Scrape the wallpaper off the wall, beginning at the seams, using a putty knife or 6" broad knife.

If you were unable to remove the outer layer, you may have to soak and peel the outer layer first, then soak and remove the bottom layer.

When all paper has been removed, rewet the wall using the removal solution. Use a scrub pad to make sure all paste is washed off the walls, leaving the surface clean and smooth. Change your rinse water frequently.

Let the wall dry completely before priming and hanging new wallpaper.

For just a border i would get a perforating tool ( its just a little roller like tool that makes little punctures) spray with a white vinegar solution about 25% vinegar and 75% water after you perforate it should loosen it up.

Over the years, I have tried everything known. I just read in some tips that WD40 will help. Of course, then you would need to clean well to get the oil off. Good luck.

Its sometimes very difficult to do and might require a machine that sprays steam... You might try a test area and try wetting the area with a sponge and warm water, let it soak into the paper see what happens....Try pulling it off carefully...

rent a wallpaper steamer, they work great, if you can't afford to be very careful and use a hot iron about 1/4 inch away from paper to heat it and peel it off

Thereis a liquid, found in carpet cleaning stores, which you mix with water, wipe on wallpaper, and in a few minutes, you can scrape it off. usually most comes off without scraping.
