Cool answers people! I was just wondering because I've noticed that I always seem to be too busy with my thoughts to look people in the eye but that they seem to be making eye contact with me. I am very good about making eye contact when someone is talking-it helps me concentrate on what they are saying.Unless they just go on and on then it feels like you are staring and you have to look away at times. And people don't approach you if you don't make eye contact. It's nothing personal it's just that I have felt the awkward feeling you get when you make eye contact and don't say anything. It almost seems like people feel pressured to say something to you if you make eye contact. I think generally, the people you are around all day (at work, home, etc,)tend to appreciate eye contact. But when you are out in public around strangers it is not.

not me, i think (in my experience) people believe it's insecurity, and they would be right. but i could see where some may take it personally or as you being rude even though you don't mean it that way

I think people get offended for some reason..but i usually avoid eye contact out in public when i had recently been crying or i look like total crap (no make-up). Yeah people think u dont feel like listening to them...they dont like the feeling of being ignored..=-/

I'd guess that it's because it looks put-offish.
I wonder why eye contact is automatically avoided by some. It must be part of the individual's social development. I've seen it done to funny degrees. Peculiar....

I have a hard time looking people in the eye that (a) I find attractive (b) I hate and (c) have one bad eye so you don't know which one to focus on. Just stare at their foreheads, works for me.

Your body language tells them that there is a reason you do not want to make eye contact. Maybe you are not being truthful with them or maybe you just dislike them to the extent that you don't want to share eye contact.

I disagree with the others- If you can't look me in the eyes when you talk to me, IT's a "you'" problem vs a me a problem, either you don't like me or you're insecure, or you don't like what I am saying it's one of those three options, it's a fact!

It is that or your lying, But if you stare at them you are challenging them. Take a course or read up on body language.
