Last night there was this guy walking close to our apartment, and he told us if we wanted the animal. We said yes, because it didn't look like it would be safe if the other guy still had it.

Yet we don't even know what type of animal it is...
We don't know the name, what it eats, nothing.

Here are some photographs, and hopefully you guys can help me:

Please help. Thanks.

No, I do not live in California.
I live in Las Vegas.

Thanks for the answers everyone! I've bought some food and fed the ferret.

I'll be taking him to an animal shelter tomorrow.

This is a ferret..
They are from the weasel family.
They require canine and feline vaccinations.
They can be “very” sneaky, steal things and hide them.
They can be house trained, housebroken.
They “need” to be supervised at all times, if not then they need to be in a cage, because they can get into walls, behind your fridge, or other places that would be impossible to get them out of, and can and will chew.

They should be groomed (little bathing), they can get very smelly, but if kept clean it’s not a big deal if you develop a bond. The smell can be an acquired scent.

They are trainable, can learn tricks, can be snuggable/lovable. They can be very silly and funny.
They can/will bond with humans.
They make a great pet for some people, but not so great pet for other people.

Well, a lot of the people with good answers know a lot more about ferrets than me. However, I thought I would add that ferrets are illegal in some states. I know my own state, California, is one.

Don't know where you live, but I would suggest you check out the legality of owning a ferret. (Maybe that's why he was giving it away?) Anyway, a lot of people own ferrets here, but it's a sort of hush-hush thing. I have heard of people's ferrets being taken away. If you're in California, it's up to you what to do with it, but it's always a good thing to be aware of... owning an illegal animal.

The animal in this picture is called a ferret. You can get ferret food at your local pet store or walmarts. It will also eat some fruits and vegetables.

What you have looks like a ferret. They are part of the mustlid family and sre related to skunks and weasles and other animals in that family. Ferrets do make great pets and are in my opinion loving animals. Here is a wesite that may help with its diet and general care.

Approximately 700 species have been named. However, a recent scientific review suggests that only about half of these are based on fairly complete specimens that can be shown to be unique and separate species. These species are placed in about 300 valid dinosaur genera (Stegosaurus, Diplodocus, etc.), although about 540 have been named. Recent estimates suggest that about 700 to 900 more dinosaur genera may remain to be discovered.

its a ferret. If you live in california be careful they are illegal but alot of people have them. They are very smelly. MOst are descented and fixed when they are babies and yours looks full grown. They eat ferret food. They also like to chew on stuff so i would invest in a cage to keep him safe when your not home. They have very cool personalities!!!

It's a ferret, I used to have 2. You need to buy it a cage with a bed in it, food, and soft bedding. They act just like cats, they are sneaky too. You need to by it a litter box and ferret litter. Make sure you clean it often because they will smell really bad, and your place could get infested with poop bugs ( happened to me, that's why I had to get rid of them). By it a water bottle like the kind a rabbit has. They like to be picked up by the back of their necks, not for too long though. They like to play with other animals. Like cats. You can find everything at a local pet store.

A ferret LOL they can be very destructive smelly creatures, no wonder he was giving it away. You will probably need some kind of cage for it for when you arent at home.

Its a nice thing you did, really nice, and God love you, but I dont care to have one in my house, my daughter wanted one but had to settle for a cat and a gecko Good luck with it.

Its a ferret, and an adorable one at that! Ferrets are a huge responsibility, and they do tend to have a strong musk, regardless of how much you clean their environment. If you cannot care for it, please do try to find someone who will. If worst comes to worst, take it to your local animal shelter and ask their advice.
