Here's a good way to look at it- pregnant women abstain from drugs all throughout their pregnancy. They stop drinking, stop smoking, stop any drugs they had been doing. Most women wouldn't think about, say, doing cocaine during pregnancy. So why would you go through 9 months, being extremely careful not to do anything that might harm your baby, and then take a high dosage of drugs that your baby will be affected by?

I chose not to use medication during the births of both of my children. Childbirth is what a woman's body is designed for. I knew there was no reason why I couldn't do it. I have a friend who still has terrible back pain from the epidural that was improperly administered four years ago when her son was born. My sister had a spinal headache that lasted three weeks after her daughter was born as a result of spinal fluid leaking from her epidural and she still gets frequent migraines which she never had before the epidural. I figure its better to tough out a few hours of pain rather than deal with a side effect that could last a life time. Epidurals slow down labor, greatly increase the chances that a c-section will be performed, increase the chances of having an episiotomy. Without medication you know exactly what is going on with your body. You know when its time to push, you can feel that progress is being made with each push. Women who have epidurals might sit around fully dilated for an hour, not knowing their baby is ready to come out. I wanted to eliminate as many risks as possible, be in control of my body during my labor and delivery and to truly experience childbirth, not just sit back and wait for the next update from the nurses. The pain is intense but very manageable. Women have been giving birth naturally for as long as women have been giving birth. It's what we're made for.

My wife had both of our kids naturally. Natural birth makes it less likely that you'll end up needing an emergency C-section or other interventions. And the drugs DO get into the baby's system, even the local anesthetics like an epidural. Recovery from the childbirth can be alot faster for the mother too, since her muscles will be in better shape.

Most moms don't just refuse meds - they go through intensive training and learning to do it. We took a 12-week birthing course, both of us, to get ready. That included all kinds of exercises and study. It was terrific just to know exactly what was going to happen before it happened (really fast). We did this class:

Don't know the answer to your question. I think that many women are afraid of the pain that they will experience when they give birth.
I had my first child naturally and had taken Lamaze classes prior to the birth. Lamaze is just a natural way of giving birth versus fighting the pain of the birth. My daughter was 9 lbs 13ozs. She was 21 inches long.
Women of the United States need to be educated on the benefits of Lamaze versus pain killers unless it is an emergency!!!!!!!!!!

I guess it is kind of empowering. Plus the medication can affect the baby. I couldn't do it. I had gas and pethodine. I went thinking natural would be great but I am no hero! I will do the same next time. Take it as it comes!! Ouch!

Im choosing to have a natural birth (no drugs) because i do not want the drugs to go to that baby (and they do). There is lots of information at this website if you are interested http://www.givingbirthnaturally.com/ Also when there is any type of medical intervention it increases your chances of needing a c section.

My deliveries were so quick that I did not have time for the epidural, but I am glad I didn't. I was able to shower 15 min after I had my son and I was up celebrating with my family when they came to visit.

It can be done without it. Women have given birth for centuries without medication. And it really isn't that bad. I got no kind of medication when I gave birth to my son- and I have no regrets.
