I’m looking for some good music to get for my 11 year old cousin. I’m trying to stay away from the kiddie-pop stuff that’s everywhere these days, do in large part to the fact that I think it may be starting to make her mother’s ears bleed, LOL.

For her last birthday, I made her a CD that included songs by KT Tunstall, The Bangles, Aretha Franklin and Blondie, to name a few. But now I’ve kind of hit a brick wall in trying to come up with new ideas.

So, do you have any good suggestions for appropriate (no vulgarity, not anything TOO adult), cool music (single songs or entire albums) for a pre-teen? Old classics or stuff with a rock or jazzy bent would be a big plus.

Thanks for your help!

Explorer: Yeah, and she's liked the stuff I've given her so far. What's wrong with wanting to share great music with younger generations? She already has just about every popular tween album out there, plus her parents vinyl from the 70s. I like giving her music for her b-day, Christmas, etc. I'm just having trouble coming up with stuff she might like and doesn't already have.

Thanks for the answers so far, I'm collecting some good ideas! Just needed people to start throwing names out there to kick start my brain!

So does anyone have opinions on good U2 or Police tracks (NOT Roxanne. or Don't Stand So Close To Me. LOL.)

ok well i think that it is definitely a MUST to get our generation and younger into the "oldies" (as most would say). i listened to them when i was younger and now my musical horizon has grown all the way from Led Zeppelin to Nonpoint to Gwen Stafani..alright well not so much Gwen, but that's another story. i just think it's important to know the musics' history before judging anything sang today. as for an 11 year old i would suggest anything by the Beatles! they're pretty much my favorite! and they have a great tempo for most of their songs, plus they will NEVER get old, and everyone knows atleast ONE of their songs! (if you don't you've been living in your parent's basement too long!!)

No. TV has become a scapegoat for everything that happens in this world. Just because a kid sees a kiss on TV doesn't mean they're going to run out and have sex. And there really aren't all that many preteens having sex to begin with, at least not any more than in the past.

okay I'll try to to keep it from being TOO bad but listen to the songs just in case there's something her parents might disagree with (I'm not sure of all there bondaries)

Poppin'- Chris Brown
The Ballad of Big papa and diamond girl- Cobra Starship
Grand theft Autumn/Where is your boy- Fall out Boy
Cupid's chokehold- Gym Class heroes

Now that I think about it The Hush sound doesn't have any swearing or "adult content" lol There cd "Like Vines" is really good I think you and your cousin would like it

You can't go wrong with Motown's prime years (1963 - 1985) for upbeat, cool music. Most of the songs still sound fresh and exciting today.

Ya leave the kid alone and let her develop her own musical tastes.
an 11 year old is going to be more concerned with fitting in with her own peer group then with listening to the type of music you think she should be listening to.
She is going to listen to what all her friends are listening to.
and at 11 that would be disney and the rest of that bubble gum crap

MAKE sure she doesn't get into mainstream pop rock. Iron maiden would be good.
