My opinion, aged 37: Squidward thinks he is higher classed and smarter than Patrick, and SpongeBob, which is true, but he also doesn't know how to be silly, and goof off, having fun. He was probably raised to believe he is more than what he is, never given the chance to act like a child.
My 9 year old son's opinion: SpongeBob, and Patrick irritate Squidward, because they are stupid.

They dont hate ya'll little dude Patrick loves ya'll he just needs a little time away from ya'll like a vaction. Sqidward is just jealous of ya'll. So dont look down little spong dude ya'll have great friends to look up to.
