you didnt say what kind of car.

its telling you that it`s time to replace the pump. a bearing is going out! You cannot lube them like you would want to lube a bearing. they are sealed and there is water around them.

Hi

The belt tension may be ok but it doesn't mean it won't slip, and you need to rectify it immediately or you will end up with a polished pulley which will also need replacing. Spray some WD40 on the ribs of the belt and if the screeching stops, renew the belt.

If it turns out that it is the water pump then you need to get it renewed immediately or you will end up with a snapped timing belt and a whole load of zeros on the end of the repair bill!!

If you do get the water pump renewed then I advise that you also have a belt and tensioner kit fitted also because it is a very bad idea to retension and old timing belt.

Good luck!

unless your vehicle is an old classic, and as it has an alternator I think it is not you are out of luck, water pump bearings are sealed for life if it is dry and squealing your shortly going to need a new water pump. If you do have a vehicle that is old enough (pre1970 at the youngest) to have grease nipples on the water pump bearings, castrol used to make a water pump grease, but you needed to re-grease it every 500 miles or so NB it will do no good at all putting this in the cooling system it is only for water pumps that were designed to be lubricated with it.

V belts drive on the sides of the belt not the bottom! if the belt is below the level of the pulley lips its worn out! and its screeching because its slipping as it cannot grip the sides of the pulley that it normally drives on, and over tension a worn out belt to try to make it grip will only result in the early demise of the alternator and water pump bearings.

Your "screeching" sound at startup is a indication that the water pump bearing is about worn out. Its time to replace your water pump. There is no way to replace or lubricate the bearing in a vehicle's water pump.

If your sure its the pump that's noisy, go to any small engineering workshop and ask the guy in charge if he would sell you a cupful of 'Suds Oil'. Its a cutting and coolant oil that they use when machining parts, Most guys will probably give you a cupful, gratis, tip into the radiator header tank and it will mix itself as you drive. A word of CAUTION, some types of anti-freeze do not tolerate Suds Oil and will froth up when warm. So be prepared to drain off the system if this happens, but wait until the squealing stops before you drain it, just put up with the frothing until its quiet, then drain and flush with clean water.

It does sound like it is your water pump. Those lubricant and etc that sell for vehicles problems they work for a extended period. But it is not a cure all. I would have it check out by a repair shop to see if it is the water pump. If it is have another one put on. So that way if it gives out say late at night or pouring rain. You are not left stranded.

I'm betting it's your belt. Even if it's a serpentine belt, with a good tensioner, they can squeal. Mine, on a Dodge Dakota 'bout drove me nuts. Finally a guy on Yahoo Answers convinced me to get rid of my Gates belt and put on a Dayco Poli-Cog belt. Now it's completely silent...
If it turns out to be the water pump, then you may as well replace the pump. I don't know of any water pump lubricant that really works...K ;o)

Water pump? No.

Your alternator belt or pulley is glazed.

When you start your car, the starter draws a whole lot of power from the battery to start the car.
As soon as the engine starts, the alternator is trying to recharge the battery before the belt and pulleys have a chance to warm up a little.

Before you start replacing a bunch of good parts with more good parts, change you drive belt. (If you've never changed it before)
