I am wondering if I have made a mistake or not, or altered their true nature. I have a 20 gallon tank with 8 bettas (4 females, 4 males) and they all get along very well, even at feeding time, but there is a hierarchy. I don't know much about fish, I just enjoy how colorful this type is, and how easy they are to keep. I just maintain their water, treat it, and change their filter every 4 weeks. They have been with me for almost 6 months now, and no squabbles, except play. Are they supposed to be violent fish?

This does happen from time to time. However the peace will not last, eventually one will decide to take out the competition and your going to have a war on.

Usually these peaceful fish will be very young, when they are all mature things will turn violent.

I would remove ALL the males to prevent a tragedy thats already brewing.

Having a community tank full of colourful bettas is every betta-keeper's dream, so I can only imagine how much you must be enjoying your beautiful tank. However, I'm forced to agree with Palor and LuvinLife - this will only work on a short-term basis. As the bettas age, they will get more aggressive and more territorial, and soon instinct is going to force them to start fighting. If I were you I would remove the males, or at least keep a very close eye on them to make sure there is no nipping going on already.

Palor is correct. It may work but not for long. Even the spawns I have had I have had to remove the males from the females. And I have even had to remove 2 males from the grow out tank due to being aggressive. Betta's are very aggressive towards their own kind. A 20 gallon is way small for keeping those fish in harmony together. Might work out now but not for long.

I`m guessing there are both females and males in this tank. If you had 8 males in that tank that would truly be something amazing that they didnt fight. I have read on betta websites that you can keep both males and females together and they will coexist peacefully as long as there are way more females to males.

Wow, that is really amazing, you must have your tank really good planted for that to be working
Amazing, usually you can't put males and females together only for breeding, but if it works great for you

I would like to see a pic of that if you could add one

Wow, that's amazing! I have male bettas (not in the same tank) and they get all flustered just catching a glimpse of eachother. Good job! =]

Yes, these sapose to be aggressive fish to their own kind but all fish has a rare chance like this one haveing 8bettas in a tank like this.

Their attitude could have change when they found their mate.

Yes, that's weird for then to be so docile. Oh, well if it's working why try to fix something that isn't broke.

that isnt weird if they were all together when you got them that way because they might all have been born together in the same batch otherwise it is weird
