Isn't it possible that the animals are already named by their own parent? Animals may designate names to their young that we do not even know about.

You know, it reminds me of parents who adopt a child, and then change its name. Regardless of the age, the child already had a name.

Because we love them, I figure. And about them already having an animal name,Yes, I'm sure there must be something that identifies them sound wise. But since we cant understand we give them names we can understand, you know!

Well maybe but we dont understand dogs language.. And we wouldnt just wanna call them "BARK BARK" whille you're walkin down the streets! ppl would look at you like u were crazy!!!
And if they you want to call them over you cant just say "HEY YOU" they need to be able to have a name to understand!
I like to name dogs cause then they feel like part of the family evn more!
And what you said about the adoption thing, well we understand HUMAN language

That's possible, but in this house if you say "Honey", or "Hey
******" or "who the f did this?" A lot of heads turn. I think that's why we give them names. If what you are saying is true, and I don't doubt it might be, that information has not been passed along to us so we improvise.

That may be true, but we need to establish communication with them, so making up a name is the best that anyone has come up with.

Beacuse when we get animals as a pet they become a part of the family so it is only right to name them.

Name recognition is definately something animals know but I think it's voice and smell recognition that brings fido running to the door

Cos you'd look daft shouting "gerwoof" out the back door for the dog to come in.

Nena and Anna Nicole ( cats) are my family. And I love them. Besides, I don't want to be called "hey you" and neither do they. My daughter just got an Aussie dog named Cooper, whose fur is part silver. I will call him "Anderson Cooper" to honor the silver haired newsman.

Well we obviously can not understand these names, so we must make our own with our race's verbal communication. Sure, the parent might have named it, but I can not tell "bark ruff ruff" from "growl bark ba bark." Can you?
