Yes.

One major difference I have seen is the gravy. I read once that when the Colonel inspected a store he checked out the gravy first. Even when he was alive, they had quality control problems. I remember fighting over the gravy. It is not worth fighting over anymore.

I believe the chicken to be a different breed. Our neighbor's chickens taste better than the chicken I purchase at the grocery store. Different breed and the use of hormone's have changed the taste.

I think the third major difference is what they fry the chicken in. When I use my pressure fryer (!) to cook chicken, I use quality peanut oil. I don't think KFC does.

I believe that they don't soak the chicken in buttermilk anymore. I remember once picking up the chicken with Mom (20 years ago) and they had pans and pans soaking in buttermilk.

Finally, it just ain't fresh. Not fresh chicken. Not fresh oil. Not fresh ingredients. Not freshly out of the oven.

The best KFC restaurant I ever ate at was in Salt Lake City (the first franchise). The KFC spots around here are much worse.

I'm 47, and I can remember going with my mom to pick it up for a sunday dinner frequently. The chicken actually tasted like chicken, which for most people younger, think that tastes like the current KFC offerings or what you can get other fast food places.

If you're curious about REAL chicken, go to a Whole Foods Market or Wild Oats or a local farmers market, buy some free range non-commercially raised chicken and cook it at home....it doesn't have the semi-slimy, rubbery texture of whatever that it is they're calling chicken in the giant American food-o-rama grocery stores put out by Perdue or Tysons. There is also a flavor good on its own without some crazy sauce thrown on or for dipping.

Yes, KFC was better when I was a kid. I can remember going with my grandpa to our local KFC and bringing home dinner. The chicken was awesome. Now it tastes like crap.

Yes, it was a lot better. Now, it tasted gross. I don't know if it is that I have grown out of most fried foods, or my taste is changing.

I read somewhere as one ages, you lose your taste buds. Perhaps I'm just getting old!

Yeah. It was, now that you mention it. Lots of things were better when I was a kid - back before the Paranoia Nazis took over America.
