Dell's introduction of its XPS M1330 notebook PC to the 13.3-inch notebook segment is expected to grab some market share currently enjoyed by Sony and Apple and the move could drive up the production of 13.3-inch panels at LCD panel makers, according to sources at Taiwan notebook makers.

Currently, Sony's SZ- and C-series notebooks and Apple's MacBook models combined account for 80% of the 13.3-inch notebook market, while other models from makers like Toshiba, Asustek Computer, BenQ and Micro-Star International (MSI), account for the remaining 20%.

The increasing popularity of Apple's 13.3-inch MacBooks could be a motive for Dell to move into the 13.3-inch segment, indicated the sources, who also noted that the availability of Intel's Core 2 Duo processors may also be a factor, since the CPUs can help improve the performance, mobility and power consumption of the 13.3-inch notebooks to levels comparable to those of 14.1- and 15.4-inch models.

It remains to be seen if other leading vendors, including Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer and Lenovo, will follow in Dell's steps. If so, LCD panel makers will be required to ramp up their production of 13.3-inch panels in order to cope with the expanding 13.3-inch notebook market, the sources maintained.
