Don't waste your time going to Disk Utility while started to the system. You can't use Disk Utility to repair any drive volume with open files.

To boot to single user mode, hold the command key plus the "S" key during startup. When you see white text on a black background, release the keys. Then wait until it is fully started and follow the instructions last line that tell you exactly how to run FSCK. But it isn't the same as Disk Utility so for best maintenance, you should boot to the install DVD, click on either Utilities or Installer (different versions) at the top and open Disk Utility.
