''current affirmative action programs are based on the belief that to overcome discrimination, we must practice the discrimination. That perverse logic has created a system that undermines the fundamental values it was intended to protect.''

affirmative action is a horrible system in my opinion.... whatever the situation , should be based on experience, knowledge, ability and intelligence... not race, color or creed... affirmative action just is a step backwards.

would you want a brain surgeon who achieved his/her position based on aff. action... or from what was stated above?

Depends on the system used. If two candidates of equal ability are presented, one is an under-represented minority and the other not... then I have no problem choosing the minority.

I've been in a government position for 25 years and despite talk, talk, talk of affirmative action in our group, we now have 2 women working and no minorities. Something in recruitment, employment or training is not working. And my job has no huge physical hoops to jump through.

Peace

No, because the starting premise is false.

Affirmative action isn't intended to overcome discrimination, it's intended to negate the effects of discrimination.

It's true. When you try to help others, you hurt others. It's the classic economics tradeoff of efficiency vs. equity. Anyone who disagrees is wrong.
