It is a 1992 Harley Davidson Heritage Softtail. It has been sitting the last few months and I wanted to go for a ride. After taking awhile to start, it finally came up. After it was running it was shooting out oil. I know it does that when it sits, but I don't know if I just let it keep shooting out and then put more oil in, or if I just let it sit and try again in a day or a few hours.

It ran fine before this, and did not have any leaks.

I have harley softail as well and it like the rest does the same thing. It is the way the oil is run thru the motor as there is no oil in a sump but rather is pumped from tank mounted above the motor where pump is located. When sitting for period of time the oil bypasses a valve and is discharged thru carb where a breather tube is located as part of the pollution equipment. Do not worrry is a normal thing with these evo motors.

The problem is your oil pump check valve has a very small leak so that when you let the bike sit for an extended amount of time the oil leaks back into the crankcase. This is not an issue as long as you ride the bike. If you are going to let the bike sit for awhile then you should drain the oil.

As for now, fire the bike up and let it puke oil. get the motor up to operating temp (and stops puking oil). shut it off and change the oil. Clean the bike and go for a ride.

Remember that these older bikes don't like to sit for extended amounts of time because the gaskets dry out. When you do start them you will have gasket leaks everywhere.

Check valve is stuck,

On the case just above the oil pump are 2 large flathead screw caps, 1 the tappet screen, 1 the check ball and spring.

While doing an oil change ,remove both, clean and re-install,being sure the O-rings on the screw caps are in good shape.

With fresh oil and the check valve cleaned it should stop pukeing oil out the breather.

4 months is long sufficient for gas to circulate undesirable. i'd recommend draining the tank ,additionally crack the drain screw on the carb(s) and enable the stale gas out. you additionally can flush the elect the flow bowl via leaving the drain screw open and dealing carb cleanser by way of it. close the drain, re-connect your gas line, fill 'er up with some sparkling top type and supply it a try. which could be sufficient because of the fact it became purely some months. in the adventure that your spark plugs are coated with the previous gas , you ought to to bathe them and you will want a great can charge on the battery , you will in all likelihood could teach it over countless circumstances before the hot gas make that is thank you to the cylinders.

For just sitting for 2 months, it probably just needs a good blowing out. Just check the oil level before each time you ride it. If this problem continues, I suggest that you take it to a Harley dealer for futher investigation.

I'll bet a dollar that you didn't close the fuel petcock before you let it sit. Your crankcase is probably full of gas. Change the oil and try again.

just ride it It will stop check the oil level in the tank though. they all do that if they sit. once had the checkball go bad in an iron sporty and it sat for like a month damb thing made enough smoke to cover the 7th fleet cause of all the oil in the crankase bike couldnt scavenge it fast enough.Rode the piss out of it till it stopped smoking no big deal.Do NOT add oil!!!! its puking out cause it CANT scavenge fast enough. wait till it stops then if oil level is low you can add.
