There's 3 possible causes to your problem and 3 very different solutions. Let's take them in the order of probability:

1) Your computer is infected with a virus/spyware program. This is a very common problem and is usually fairly simple to take care of. All you need is an anti-virus with which you can scan your computer for problems and remove threats. Personally, i reccommend you perform the bitdefender online virus scan at the link below.

2) Your modem drivers are outdated, causing hardware-to-software incompatibilities, which can be easily solved by downloading newer drivers from the manufacturer's site. I've personally experienced this problem with my Scientific Atlanta Webstar modem and updating my driver completely fixed it.

3) Your motherboard/processor is overheating because one of the fans isn't working properly or because they simply can't put up with how much you use the computer. I suggest you open up your computer (if you can without losing your warranty) and cleaning the cooler fans with a toothpick. Dust particles greatly affect the performance of your cooler and as i've found out, they're quite attracted to the fans. If this doesn't work, you might want to think about replacing your coolers/having your computer looked at by a proffessional.
In case none of these solutions work for you, there's always the back-up:

Reboot your computer with the original Windows XP cd in your CD/DVD-ROM and reinstall your system. I personally only do this if i feel i have no choice, but it would most deffinitley put an end to your problem.

Hope my answer's been useful to you. Good luck with those bugs!

When this happened to me, I spent several days going back and forth to various computer shops in my area. As it turns out, all I had to do was stop poking at the power button all the time. I felt so ridiculous when I finally figured out what it was. But it was very difficult to stop. It's like OCD. I felt like something really bad would happen if I didn't poke it every fifteen to twenty minutes. But then when I did finally stop, the computer stayed on (except during thunderstorms when it still occasionally flickers like crazy sometimes!). I don't know if this is the same thing that has happened to you, but think about it... it kinda makes sense in a way.

My parents had this problem with their computer so I understand your frustration..... uluvtamiko is correct on what she said as that's what we tried with my parents computer. I tried reformatting it and it still had the same problem, so since my parents don't have a lot of money, we opted to go with the cheap route of trying a different hard drive and it didn't work for us..... We have yet to try anything else as of yet.... but hopefully you'll find some luck! My parents were running off Windows 2000, however I have seen it with XP as well (from others posing questions and a friend of mine had that as well).

Good luck.

It sounds like you have a virus or spy-ware, run a virus check and a spy-ware program to find and delete them.

Hopefully you can find it before it does any major damage. I hope you have all your personal files backed up, if not back it up quickly before you can't.

You may need to reformat and reload windows if you can't find the cause, that's the only other way to fix the problem that I am aware of.

Good Luck!

I hard two differant PCs doing the some the and both was a fan problem. My fan would stop it overheated. I took fan out and went to Radio Shack and match the amps/volts and it only cost my about $15.00 each. check that out before you spend high money to fix.............Good luck

If your warranty has not expired yet take it in to see what is wrong. You could either have an infection or a problem with the hardware.

unbelievably the default shutdown setting in vista is hibernation NOT "off" reset the default to off and the computer will shut off instead of being woken from hibernation by the antimalware service running a scan

I believe its either your CPU or Motherboard overheating. Perhaps get a better fan or a new coolant system.

You have a virus in your system. I had the same problem with my sister's PC and I ran virus scan on her PC and discovered the virus.
