I recently painted several pine shleves. I placed items such as toys, books, and other crap. When I went pick them up they stuck to the painted shelf an left behind marks, scrapes and even pieces of fabric and paper. Is ther a way to prevent this from happening? a sealer? polyurathane? I don't want to use ugly plexi glass. Also, It dried for over a week before i put anything on it so save the "wait for it to dry" responses please. thanks again.

Sometimes pine can continue to be tacky even through paint, did you use a primer before you painted? I would sand them down really good, use a really good primer, maybe a couple coats and then repaint...

It's the paint. Some latex paints, especially vinyl latex, stay sticky for a week or so. And some never lose their stickiness, especially in warm, damp weather.

If after a week the paint is still tacky, you would need to repaint with a high-quiality acrylic latex paint.

The sticking problem is called "blocking."

There are jut some paints that continue to come off even months after they are painted. The American Traditions Paint from Lowes was tacky and rubbery for about 6 months before it finally stopped pulling off. I used the cheaper Wal-Mart brand and it worked a lot better. I even primed my walls and waited two days before putting the top coat down and it was still like that.

Well you should have sanded the shelves down before you painted. Then a coat or two of primer. Then the paint. Then for added safty I would have added a top coat of sealer or something like that as well.

If the topside of the shelves will not be seen, you can dust them with cornstarch. I have seen this done on mats painted for Winterguard to keep them from sticking when the mat is folded. It dulls the color somewhat but if it is up so the top is not seen, it won't matter.

When using latex enamel, or acrylic paint, you have to give the paint some time to completely dry and cure. Depending on heat and humidity this can take several days or a week or so.

Try primer then paint again. For shelves, I prefer the latex outdoor paint - - tougher.
