You can go to Coyote Point in San Mateo for some of the beach activities. Since it's bay and not the ocean, you won't really have much fun swimming. Though there are wind surfers and boats that start from there. There's also little hiking trails at Coyote point and a museum as well. See link below.

To get there, you can take Dore Ave exit from 101 North and turn left at very first intersection after exit and then right turn after you pass the golf course on right (that's before the underpass of Peninsula Ave). Alternatively, you can take Peninsula Ave exit and make very first right before you overpass the freeway, and then very first left as soon as you see golf course, this will take you to Coyote Point. Currently, they have major construction going on in this area so be careful and drive with caution.

If you want to go to actual beach on Pacific coast, you can go to Half Moon Bay beaches. The distance is about 15 miles from San Mateo. To get there, you'd take 92 West towards HMB and keep driving straight. After you underpass freeway 280, the speed on 92 reduces and you start seeing signals. Then it's very simple, just keep going straight without any turns. Once you are in Half Moon Bay and 92 comes to a T junction with hwy 1, you make a left on hwy 1. Turn right at Poplar street and it will take you to the beach at the end of the street. Another good beach is little further down South on hwy 1 and make a right turn at Mira Montes Point Road. As soon as the street turns near the mobile homes area, the parking lot is on your left. Park the car and walk through the golf course to the beach. And if you're interested in driving some more to go to another state beach, you can always drive on hwy 1 south up to Pomponio beach in San Gregorio. That's about 10 miles from hwy 1 and 92 intersection. The drive is also very beautiful.

it's been a really long time- and I mean a really long time, like 30 years- since I've been there... but I used to go to Coyote Point north of San Mateo. Just get on the 101 heading towards SF. I know it's before the SF airport and I think there was still a sign for it on the highway when I visited about 3 years ago. It's only a few minutes from SM

From San Mateo take hwy 92 west towards Half Moon Bay. Off hwy 1 there are a lot of beaches, pick any one or just go to the first one you see.

Coyote Point is where we used to go. But maybe it's because the sewage treatment plant located not too far away, I didn't like to swim in the water because water always felt slimy. Otherwise, it's a OK beach and you can walk around the area and look at the museum.
