You can be an "actor" no problem with no agent. But to be a professional actor in Los Angeles or New York, you need an agent. I did many small speaking roles without an agent on soaps when I started out, but quickly discovered that casting directors, directors, producers, the people who hire actors do NOT like do negotiate contracts or deal directly with actors. You can definitely get work without an agent through connections, by submitting yourself to casting notices that are posted on LA Casting, Now Casting, Actors Access, BackStage West, etc. But the work will be far and few between.

You wouldn't be concerned about this if you had the proper background to be an actor. I am guessing you have very little and may be quite young. While it is possible to get a role without an agent you have to know how to go about doing that . PS There are no such thing as open auditions for any good parts.

Yes, you can be an actor without an agent. You study and learn your craft. You can search casting agencies for open auditions.
Once you are skilled, an agent will be a necessity to get the good auditions.

Although I would go for an agent, (for screen roles) a few actors & actresses squeeze in, most recent that comes to mind, Nikki Blonsky in Hairspray.

Yes. Every actress had to start somewhere. Act in local plays. When you become skilled at your craft and start to act in movies, you will find out about agents.
May God bless you.
