Contact a gun shop in the area and see what type of training they have. I wouldn't suggest any type of weapon that could be taken away from you, and used against you, this happens more often then not.
You have to be ready to use a weapon, once the gun is fired, you can't bring the bullet back.
At night, in a darkened bedroom, you have to see an intruder to shoot him/her. A shotgun would work good.

By the time you would wake up, see someone, and replay it would already be to late for you. Remember that.
It would be better to have an alarm of some type that would be noisy enough to wake the dead, and the intruder wouldn't know where or how to turn it off.

I have an 12 gage over and under with no. 4 goose shot, steel behind the bedroom door and keep a .38 special in my drawer and, a resin baseball bat behind the door. I would choose the bat because I don't want to harm anyone with taking thier life, breaking bones maybe.

I am highly trained and well adapted to the use of all weapons. I've served two years with the Army Ragers in 'Nam.

My daughter carried a .25 calibure and was trained to use it, in a parking lot scuffle it was taken away, the attacker ran but, she lost the gun, it was never recovered.
A friend lost her "zapper" the same way, it was used on her but, the attacker ran, leaving her helpless in the night.

To start with , I have a small dog that would alert me of an intruder, second I have a short rifle close by my bed. If an intruder hears you work the action of a gun they will most likely turn and run.

The most ideal weapon is a gun, but since I don't have one I'll grab the closest bat, bouken (wooden katana), or shinais (kendo stick) that I have by my bedside or behind the door and fight. Given the fact that I've been doing well with both weapons in sparring lessons I could kill someone with those. But if the intruder has a gun, it's all over.

Obviously a gun is the best weapon, but you must be able to use it, maybe take a course in gun safety and spend some time on the range. Even then it should be a last resort mace should be tried first if all fails then its inevitable. My choice Berretta semi automatic 9MM.

The key here is prevention. Make sure your doors and windows are invader proof and get an alarm system. If you can't afford to get one installed then buy one from Radio Shack or some electronic store. If you have to defend yourself and it's you or them; deadly force would be your only choice and then its down to 357, 45, 9mm........... and make sure you are sure of yourself with your weapon of choice. Again though a little prevention goes a long way...........

Guns & knives had been a usual first thoughts. I would advise against both. It is a proven statistic that majority of women had gun and/or knife taken away by intruder and used against them. If not professionally trained, I would stick with pepper spray, running and screaming 'fire' (receives more help than yelling 'help').
