Solve.
The amount of time it takes a swimmer to swim a race varies inversely as the average speed of the swimmer. A swimmer finishes a race in 500 seconds with an average speed of 3 feet per second. Find the average speed of the swimmer if it takes 375 seconds to finish the race.

5 feet per second
3 feet per second
4 feet per second
6 feet per second

Problem 2

Solve.
The amount of water used to take a shower varies directly as the amount of time that the shower is in use. A shower lasting 22 minutes requires 15.4 gallons of water. Find the amount of water used in a shower lasting 6 minutes.

4.9 gallons
3.5 gallons
4.2 gallons
132 gallons

1)simple it is 4 feet/s
i will xplain
since speed is inversily prportional to time
let
speed=a/time
where a=constant
therefore from question
3=a/500
x=a/375
solving this we get x=4

2)similarly
15.4=a*22
x=a*6
solving this we get
x=4.2 gallons

Varies directly means there is a direct relationship between the 2 items, as item 1 increases, so does item 2. Varies inversely means the relationship is fractional, as item 1 increases, item 2 increases by a lesser amount which is the one divided by the increase.

In problem 1 you need to first identify the length of the race which is time multiplied by average speed. Divide this distance by the second time to obtain the second average speed. Problem 2 wants the water consumption. You need to find the consumption per minute in order to find the answer.

Good luck.

all you need to do is take all those words, find the important piece of information and then turn that into a simple math problem.

swimmer takes 500 seconds at 3ft/s. so how far was the race?

500s x 3ft/s = 1500 feet. so 1500ft/375s= 4ft/s
4 feet per second

now on this one we need to find how much water per minute was being used.. 22 minute shower took 15.4 gallons of water. so 15.4g/22min=.7 gallons per minute. .7g/minx6min=4.2 gallons

500 = k/3
k = 1500
375= 1500/t
t = 1500/375 = 4 seconds

15.4 = k *22
k= 15.4/22 = .7
W= .7(6) = 4.2 gallons

x = 3*500/375 = 4 fps

2)
x = 6*15.4/22 = 4.2 gal.
