Some cars require a simple modification to DISABLE this. Its supposed to be a safety feature, but don't the cars with the lights on steal the attention away from the normal cars? maybe the normal car taking a left turn? If everyone was able to get this "feature" then the visibility of every car would be back to how it was. the slightly older find it worse.

Todays newer cars either have running lights and some have head lights that are on constantly,My blazer has head lights and my trucks are running lights, this also is a norm for motor cycles, its a safety precaution. The vislble you are the better, this is a very good idea for motor cycles they need all the protection they can get, being a formal cycle owner I can say the more visible you are the better,I ran my cycle head lights way back when before they became an automatic thing. Cycle riders in my opion do not always get the respect and courtesy on the highway as cars and trucks.I want to believe that it is from being less visible and that a lot of the cars and truck drivers dont react quick enough when approaching a motor cycle and I believe this also holds true to a lot of the smaller low to the ground cars.Lets all be carefull out their .

Motorcycles since the late 70s all have their lights come on automatically; so do most rental cars and some others. It's mostly an attempt to maximize visibility.

It is a safe attention getter. A person can see a light for the most part that is anytime of day. Back in the 50s and 60s folks use to install white or clear lights in there grills to get you to see them.

Most lights are auto on nowdays on cars and trucks.

some cars its automatic, same for bikes, somepeole just turn on their running lights for that little extra attention to make sure they are seen, and for some people its stricitly a habbit. Almost all truck drivers do it, they are required by their driving company, for safety reasons. If they get hit, well they had their lights on its not like they couldnt have been seen under any conditions.

I think that I can see YOU BETTER ON THE ROAD!!!!!! Cars that are light colored (white, gray and such) have a tendency to blend into the road and for me personally, I can see the cars better if they have their lights on.
Another thing - at dusk there are people who DON'T DRIVE WITH THEIR LIGHTS ON - and those people are VERY HARD TO SEE TOO!!!!!!
It is like I told this young driver ( teenager or early 20's) he may be able to see me ( he was driving at dusk with no lights on)- but I have a harder time seeing him. He said that he had never thought of it that way.
I hope this helps you understand.

They're called daytime running lights. Most new cars have that as a standard feature. With motorcycles especially, it helps other vehicles see you better.
