it is not working so what do i do to establish a connection and get internet?

You need to replace the dual phone jack plug thing with one of the following: hub, switch, router.

These jacks better known as RJ-45.
Before intalling anything if you have DSL there are going to be some problems before getting the internet to work(especially if you company is bellsouth, now the new AT&T).
If that is the case you would first bridge your modem(if you have a Westbell modem). But if everything else is ok, and the problem is just not picking the internet signal, you might want to reset your router. Unplog the power source cable, wait about 20 seconds, and plog it back again.

Maximum length of cable from router to a computer is 100 meters for high speed ethernet, beyond that distance it will not work without a signal repeater.
So if the "really long cable" is beyond that limit, it won't work.
