It only happens when I start braking. It sounds like metal is scraping together. It is coming from the passenger side rear. What could this be and how easy would it be to fix at home? My dad says it is possibly the drum brakes...anyone else have any ideas. It is a 1999 Pontiac Grand Am V6

it may be just rust caught in the drums but you need to pull them to inspect

Listen to your father and that is good advise from him.

Most of the time when you hear metal against metal or grinding noise. That is telling you that the rivets holding the shoes together are rubbing against the drum and it is time for a brake job.

You ask if it could be fixed at home and the answer is yes. If your father, you or his friends are what i call back yard mechanics. The savings for both sides are about $150 or so.

the metal scraping is a sign that you need new brake pads, there is a thin piece of metal that stick out and when your pads where down then it will hit the caliper and cause a metal on metal grinding sound, telling you to get new brakes.

Ya, need brakes.. If you have no idea how to fix them---best left to the experts. Brakes stop the car and if you mess it up your gona be in an accident... I can just hear the prosecuting attorney as he questions you about your skill in doin brakes---and you have none...
Take it to the garage...

If you can't remember the last time you had your brakes serviced, they're probably worn out.

If that's the case, you will have a very hard time removing the brake drums.

Take it to a pro.
