Not shirr were ya got that legal advice from cause it's wrong, but I think the mistake lies in the wording and the part that needs to be changed to make it the illegal that your probably thinking about would be to take out the words "want to" and change it to "am going to" Or " will" or "gonna" as slang, but you can legally say you wish, want desire to, kill anyone you want that is not a threat.

It's also illegal to say the word "bomb" at an airport.
It's really bad if, while standing in the airport, you yell out that you want to kill the president with a bomb.

It is wrong to say I want to kill someone especially the president. It also just as illegal to suggest it to someone else and that do it.
"It's illegal to say that if you don't do it, someone else should."

Of course it is illegal. What a horrible thing to do even to a president as bad as dubya. There are other methods of handling a bad president rather than assassination.

In most contexts, yes, you are correct.
There are some rare instances that the courts have granted that the statement was not intended literally -- but as a general rule, it is a violation of federal law.
See 18 USC § 871 [threats by mail] and 18 USC § 879

Might as well wander up and down the aisle of 737 mumbling "Nobody likes hijackers. Hijackers are bad people. I hope there's never another hijacking in this country". That would be another great test case for you see what the legal bounds are for your freedom of speech.

I'm curious about whether the administration would consider you an unlawful combatant and put you into isolation at Guantanamo until you confess to whatever they want?
You might learn to hold your breath under water.

It is illegal to say that you "are going to" kill anyone. Stating a negative "desire" is only illegal if you also display the means and capacity to carry that desire through. Even then, it is tough to prove and most likely will not be prosecuted.

Sounds like the thought police are out in force.
Surely only making a statement of intent could/should be seen as illegal - not a statement of desire.
That having been said, making such a statement of desire (especially in the current climate of fear) does rank near top fo the chart of stupid actions.
