I've never heard that. I have always thought that pearls were to be cherished. When as a gift they meant the person receiving them was cherished.
In searching I found these notes....
The Hindus used pearls as an especially strong charm to protect themselves against all kinds of evil.
also... for weddings....
"Married in Pearl, you will live in a whirl."
Not sure what that means....???
Blessed Be!

No, I have not. Pearls have a very beautiful symbology, especially when given as a gift. They represent beauty, fertility, the moon, and rebirth. In this latter, they were often place in the mouth of a loved one before burial or burning, as a symbol of rebirth.
The Romans considered peals as symbols of Isis, Queen of the Heavens, and knew them as talismans to protect against calamity. So sacred, only the wealthy were allowed to wear them. The Persians also saw the moon - as a Goddess - in pearls. The Egyptians were buried with them, and the ancient Hindus knew them as carriers of prosperity and longevity. While the Aztecs and Mayans saw pearls as containing magical powers.
During the European Dark Ages, Knights wore pearls in battle for they believed them to contain protective magic. Later, pearls became part of everyday royal clothing, being sewn into even undergarments - here again, this was only among the royalty. The Greeks considered them sacred to marriage so adorned gowns and bouquets of flowers with them; and Krishna, the Hindu god, gifted his daughter Pandaia with pearls on her wedding day. According to Hindu and Buddhist myth, the Third Eye of boths Siva and Buddha is a pearl.
Native Americans used pearls and mother of pearl for decoration and some tribes used them as money. Pearls have also been seen as medicional, used in healing texts dating back to 5000 BCE. Mostly drank, they are said to detox the body, balance the liver and nervous system, and 'brighten' the skin. Drank, they have also been used as aphrodisiacs.
Today, pearls vary in cost from affordable to those of Pierre Cartier's multi-million dollar strands. Pearls are the birthstone of June; represent Gemini and Cancer; are said to ease stress; and be attuned to female energies.

Yes,and though I ,personally dont believe in these fallacies but people have claimed that its true. The reason maybe that pearls are associated with tears hence those who believe in all this ,when they face some problems or break ups in some relationship, they automatically link them with pearls.
I believe that there is nothing which brings good luck or bad luck,it is all in the hands of God.All these beliefs are man made and because of blind faith in them they tend to associate their fortunes with all objects so as to blame other things rather than accept their own faults.
