Some will say the San D zoo, however speaking as someone who works at a zoo... they are not as good as the media makes them sound to be.

Columbus is by far on the top ten, but the fact that the largest zoo in the US (off total land) helps them greatly. Not to mention they have Jack Hanna to promote them. They are opening a 17 acre polar bear exhibit next year and a 75 acre African plains a few years after that.

I would also throw the Bronx Zoo and the National in there as well.

The problem is that no two zoos are the same so it makes them hard to compare to one another. For example, take two zoos, both with a gorilla exhibit and a aquarium. At zoo 1 their gorilla exhibit sucks but their aquarium rocks... at zoo 2 their gorilla exhibit is kick *** but their aquarium sucks. So, which is better both have things that suck but both have parts that rock.

Some will judge a zoo based off of the number of animals they have, I tend to think that is a bad thing to do. You can have some a zoo stuffed with tons of animals living in poor conditions... or you can have a zoo with less animals but the lower numbers give the animals far more room and better conditions.

But yes, Columbus is one of the best and only getting better. Tell you one thing, Zoo Atlanta I did NOT enjoy.

the Fort Worth zoo is pretty good, the Dallas zoo is improving, the San Antonio zoo is fun because of its age. And last summer we went to the Cheyenne Mountain zoo in Colorado springs for vacation and it's pretty cool to climb; its the only mountain zoo in America (and possibly the world) and from the base level to the top is equivalent to a eight story building.

*Sigh* Two famous people die at the same age and suddenly it's a coincidence. You know, every 18 minutes, a baby dies before his/her first birthday. Do you think that's a coincidence too? (I'm actually not sure about that fact but I have heard it multiple times) Basically, yes I think it was a coincidence. A very, very unfortunate coincidence.
