Moony-Remus Lupin. Wormtail-Peter Pettigrew. Padfoot-Sirius Black. Prongs-James Potter. These four blokes are known as the Marauders. They created a map of Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Three are animagi. James could transform into a stag-Prongs make sense now? Sirius could transform into a black dog. And Peter in a rat. Remus is a werewolf.

James Potter. The names are the nicknames of the four Marauders, one based on how he's transformed and three on their animagus forms.
Since Lupin is a werewolf, he transforms into wolf form under the light of the full moon. Hence he's Moony. James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew learned to become animagus so they could be with Lupin when he transforms. Pettigrew becomes a rat, which means he has a tail that resembles a rat. So he's Wormtail.
Sirius becomes a large, black dog. Look at the soles of a dog's paws and you'll find pads there. Thus Sirius is Padfoot.
James's animagus form is that of a stag, in otherwords a male deer. Another word that could be used for a deer's antlers is prongs due to thepoint on the antlers. Prongs is thusly James's nickname within the Marauders.

Prongs(deer antlers) is James Potter. Wormtail(rat) is Peter Pettigrew. Moony(full moon/werewolf) is Remus Lupin. Padfoot(dog) is Sirius.
You found that out in the prisoner of azkaban book when he find the maurader map with their names on it.
