Same reason it's not in the USA and other countries. Other sports were established and have the main interest of the populous. It can certainly be played by girls, but is commonly played by men.

Cricket is not popular in Scotland because people over there are not showing much interest in the game of cricket as compared to other sports.

Cricket is not popular in Scotland because they are too tight fisted to pay the little bit extra for the equipment (bats, wickets, pads etc.)
Plus the weather is so bad they would never finish a game.
Also if there were any green open spaces with good grass all the local smackheads and tramps would be impossible to have to keep moving on before any game.

It may not seem popular from the English perspective, but it is played fairly substantially at village level. Indeed Freuchie (in Fife) won the village championship around 1995 which includes all English vilages too.
A number of Scots have also been regular members of the England cricket team.
To be honest I'm not sure why the 'National' side is not more prominent, but the weather could also be a factor here.

Maybe if the stadia were covered, it's just no fun sittin in the rain.
Now if the stadia were covered, then your onto a winner, sittin for a week nonstop drinkin, takin the pi$$ out of some guy's in wolly jumpers and leg pads.
As Paul Weller once said That's Entertainment.
Edit - ah robert, have you ever tried chucking one of they stones on an ice while half cut. It's hard goin. I think they should introduce that as the new test for stopping suspected drunk drivers.

The Scottish play cricket, it can't be played after school as easily because it gets dark earlier.
The Scots play cricket internationally, and we had a player at Yorkshire (Gavin Hamilton). What level of interest do you expect?

It's not popular in Scotland for the same reason it's not popular in America. They're no good at it and it has rules that take more than ten minutes to learn. Unlike chucking a stone down an ice track.
