that person is taking up all the bandwidth and leaves the computer on all day so it make the connection slow as hell. I don't want to permanently disconnect them just temporarily. I tried going to control panel and network, I can see them but there is no way i can disconnect them, so I need another way of doing it, or am I doing it wrong?

if it helps the router that i have is the linksys WRT54G.

If they are using P2P get them off your network immediatly. Your router has floating IP addresses, if anybody (read RIAA) comes knocking they will be looking for the router owner, not the PC involved.

The other possibility is the PC is own3d, and is a bot on a net. Those are about the only two things that will suck bandwidth with an unused computer.

In both cases, change the key at the router, and include them out. They are not safe for your network.

I also have the POS WRT54G & I've experienced the same type of idiots as you -- the solution is to ban them from the router via the MAC authorization list. They wont have internet access and your internet will work great! You'll have to unblock them when you're done using the Internet but they might inquire about the crappy Internet service at which time you can inform them the ISP doesn't like p2p.

Log in to your router and set a different encryption key. Don't be too shy about it. If they want to share your connection but won't keep to the rules, they need to learn. There is nothing you can do from the pc.

That router can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. Go into the router and turn off their access for an hour. Or turn on mac filtering and add your pc but not his, then when you want them to have access again turn it back off.

Restrict the times they are allow to access via the router. You can access the router with a web browser at 192.168.1.1
