When referring to "the Civil War", I believe you are referring to the American Civil War... in this case, the reason that it is a popular topic- is because it still effects America today on personal, economical, political, social and cultural issues. Any civil war- weather it was America's or Russia's or England's is a popular topic- because it is a unique circumstance that "parties" in the same culture, society or nationality fight one another to gain political control. Usually, a civil war reconstructs and revolutionizes the structure of the original political power. For all these reasons- it becomes a popular topic because many people share opinions and perspectives of the war becasue of the causes, the events during the war, and the lasting effects...

It was a watershed event in the history of the U.S. Those of us that grew up in the south have learned about this war from a very early age. Since most of the battles were fought in the south and the greatest hardships were visited upon the southern population, it is a subject tied to family histories, mostly through oral traditions. Things like Great-Grandmother hiding the silver in the well and the goat in the swamp to keep Sherman's troops from stealing them. It's a deeply personal history for many of us handed down from generation to generation.

The Civil War is such a controversial topic is because it affected many peoples lives in the past and still today. Growing up in the South, I have heard much about the Civil War. Many of my relatives fought for the Confederacy and died for it. So naturally I was taught that Yankees were bad and that they destroyed the South (which they truthfully did destroy). But I know that many loyal and brave Union soldiers fought and died for what they believed in, just as their enemies to the South were doing. Many people in the South thought that they were fighting for states rights, not slavery. To them it was just a normal institution of life. It was not considered evil as it was up north. The Southerners also fought harder because they were the ones being invaded. When you have to defend your home soil of course your going to fight harder. But when it boils down to it, you can't blame either side, for they were just doing what was right in their minds.
