have earthlink try to go to bridge mode for wireless router

Reset the password on the modem (look for small reset button and hold it in for a few seconds) Refer to the user manul (download online if you dont have it already -- before resetting) for the default password

Check the manual for the modem before you attempt to re-set anything. You should not need bridge mode anyway, the standard router connection does not require this.
