Absolutely the same thing. GOP neo-cons have no concern of future consequences as they will not personally suffer from them.

I don't think it's much like Iran/Contra, in that we are not trying to fund any secret war here. The war we are funding is quite out in the open. The current administration is funding and arming Sunnis out of desperation, because they have no clue how to end the war. Like all good conservatives (neo), they believe violence is the answer to all problems. Therefore, the more guns we have in the hands of the population, the more likely peace will magically break out.
The bottom line is that they have NO CLUE what they are doing and NEVER DID. They are grasping at straws. They just hope that they can hold on till past the next presidential elections and hand off their mess to the next administration. And count on future neocon historians to blame that next administration for 'losing' the war, with no fault going to W.

Past US governments, particularly conservative ones, have a rich history of providing support to governments and groups against those that they disagree with. For example, supporting Osama Bin Laden against the Soviet Union and supporting Saddam Hussein against Iran. Is anyone else noting a pattern here.
Edit: It's not like Iran/Contra at all. Iran/Contra was an illegal operation perpetrated by certain members of Reagan's staff. The current supply of Sunnis is a legal and official government operation

This is simply typical historical US foreign machinations..
Sunnis make up some 80 % of Muslims in the world.
Shias make up 60% of Iraqi Muslims and most of the Iranian Muslems.
Saudia Arabia is mostly Sunni Muslim but of a particular radical kind called Wahhabism.
The "national interests " of the(READ OIL) simply means that the US cannot afford to jeopardize their historical incestuous relationship with the Saudi right wing dictatorship by enraging the Wahhabis if they believe the US is to cozy with the Shia majority in Iraq.
All experts agree that a majority of the insurgents from other countries come NOT FROM IRAN but from Saudi Arabia but the US cannot demonize and vilify the Saudis as they do the Iranians .
Many experts further agree that it was the SUNNI Saudi Arabia Muslims that convinced the Iraqi Sunnis to stop killing Americans and co-operate with them as they are now doing.
In effect,the US arms support to the Iraqi Sunnis is primarily to shore up the Saudi Arabia dictatorship by making the Wahhabi Muslims "happy" ..
Most experts agree that if the Wahhabi Sunni Muslems turned against the Saudi family dictatorship ,Saudi Arabia would implode as quickly as did Iran.
Like all short term US machinations this one will turn around and bite them down the road.
One driving axiom of the US has always been ;
"THE ENEMY OF MY ENEMY IS MY FRIEND "
Here is a classic case where the US's short term gain is now long range pain in that the US fully supported BIN LADEN in the 80s in Afghanistan's war with the USSR .
In a very profound sense,the US created al qaida period.
