we recently had a baby boy and we were looking for a unique name...we were travelling overseas in Europe and on one of the beaches we met a handsome surfer named Maro and the name seemed very exotic to us and we now named our little boy the same name...however, we are getting a lot of negative opinions about it and its hurt my feelings - so you think it was unfair of us to name our little boy such an unusual name???

Maro is actually of Japanese origin and means: Myself.

I think it is unique yet not absurd.

He is your child and you were entitled to name him as you saw fit, while taking into consideration that he would be his own person one day.
If you are unhappy with your choice of names then call your son by his middle name (if he has one) but don't pay attention to the negativity from others.

It does remind me of "marrow" as in bones. I have never heard it before, and don't know what the etymology of the name is. Marco and Mario are both nice, would you consider one of them you could use Maro as a nickname?

Name your kid what ever you want, just know that Maro sounds like the stuff inside of the bone (marrow).

Might get teased a bit in school, but it's not such a horrible nae that he will resent you for it. Everyone grows to love their name... eventually. He might struggle with it through adolescence, but it is a good name, and very masculine. Things should work out.

Not to hurt your feelings, but to be honest: I immediately thought of bone MARROW. I don't think the child would like to be called bone marrow his whole life, I know I wouldn't. However, it ultimately your choice.

It is definitely unique. But, maybe too unique. Kind of reminds me of the Super Mario Brothers: Mario and Luigi!

How about:
Terrick
Ashado
Jason
Sean
Marco
Marque
Romaro
Romario
These are just a few suggestions, but if you still prefer MARO,its a great name you should go with it.
