There is a Library that is close to my apartment that provide free public wireless internet. What do I need to connect my Desktop PC to WiFi and get a good signal? Also, what is DHCP?

The Library does mention that I need to have DHCP enabled. What do I do?

If it is legal, you can install a wireless network interface card (WNIC) on the pc and configure it. If the signal is too weak, you can see if the WNIC maker offers an external antenna for it so you can mount it outside and wire it inside. You may look for a WNIC that has this ability first as I suspect you may need it.

DHCP is dynamic host configuration protocol. This is commonly used to automate LAN IP address issuing. The alternative is to use a static IP scheme and you need to keep a manual record of IP addresses which is a book keeping chore.

I suspect your library uses DHCP to assign LAN IP addresses.

Linksys makes a wireless PCI adapter that pops in the same way as a wired Ethernet controller. I have used it in the past and had good luck with it. Check with the library first to see if it is OK, because they may have intended it for laptop users in the library. Also ask them what the range is and make sure you are that close to the router. A basic wireless router usually only has about a 250 ft range. They may have something a little stronger, but that is unlikely in a smaller city or town.

All you opt for is a instantaneous community card. you could installation an inner one (demands beginning up your pc and installation new hardware) or greater in basic terms a usb community card which plugs right into a unfastened usb port (in case you do not have a unfastened usb port, a usb hub is a miles cheap way of including greater ports). I recommend a usb community card as they are less difficult to place in.

You will probably want an external (usb maybe) wifi adapter that has excellent signal gain.

You are unlikely to get a connection unless your walls adjoin and their router is right against the adjoining wall. Also they may use encryption, in which case they will have to give you a key to use the system.
