I don't think its absolutely vital that you learn spanish. I'm Mexican American and I do plan on teaching my kids both languages because that's how I was brought up. But if your family is from the US, there's nothing wrong with that at all. People who try to make you feel like less of a person for not knowing spanish are just ignorant. The most important part of our culture isn't the language, it's being close to your family and being true to yourself.

You should learn ANY(!) second language that you wish, but only because YOU are convinced that it is to YOUR(!) advantage. Not because OTHERS look down on you.
Contrary to the mono-linguist, close-minded philosophy of 'Amrrrcans' (... that's the way that the Little-Big Cowboy @ The White House pronounces it - LOL), a person with two languages 'in the sack', is worth double in life. Now, Spanish coincides with your ancestry, and it happens to be nowadays the fastest growing 2nd language in 'Amrrrca'. Soooo, if you live in 'Amrrrca', it behooves you to look in that direction. I speak Spanish and English (... and Span-glish - LOL) fluently, and I'm having a BALL!
Hope it helps!

It might be a good idea to learn Spanish because it is a very practical, useful language that will help you be successful in your life. Knowledge is power, being able to communicate with hundreds of millions of people is incredibly valuable. And it is part of your heritage, it is a great, noble heritage, it is something worth knowing and appreciating and respecting.

I'm 50% Hispanic and don't know fluent Spanish. My dad and grandparents speak it fluently and I don't. Its not required. If you want to learn it then great but you don't have to.....and if you learn it then you need to use it frequently. If you don't use it, you'll lose it.
EDIT: To "unbiased"--- you might want to think about changing your screen name.

I'm Irish-Germanic and a little Cherokee, but I don't speak Gaelic or German or Native American. We have family traditions that come from those origins, but we don't' speak the languages. I did study French in school, but as far as I know, I'm not French. Defining people by their language is as bad as defining them by the color of their skin, or their religion. Everyone should be judged by their choices, for it is our choices that really define who or what we are.
